New Swept-Source OCT for Glaucoma: Improvements and Advantages

چکیده

When we refer to sweptsource optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), “swept source” refers to the type of laser incorporated into the device. Instead of the superluminescent diode laser typical of conventional spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT), SS-OCT uses a short-cavity swept laser. Although the swept-source laser has a wavelength centered at approximately 1 μm, the laser actually changes, because it sweeps across a narrow band of wavelengths with each scan. Like SD-OCT, SS-OCT has a fi xed reference arm, but it does not use a spectrometer. Instead, a complementary metal oxide semiconductor camera is employed, along with two fast parallel photodiode detectors. The result is that SSOCT is able to achieve the highest imaging speed of any commercially available OCT with 100,000 A-scans obtained per second. Additionally, SS-OCT has a high axial resolution of just 5 μm and an improved signal-to-noise ratio. With a basic understanding of the technical differences between conventional and SS-OCT we can now explore the advantages of this new technology.

Imaging of the Lamina Cribrosa using Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography.

The lamina cribrosa (LC) is the presumed site of axonal injury in glaucoma. Its deformation has been suggested to contribute to optic neuropathy by impeding axoplasmic flow within the optic nerve fibers, leading to apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells. To visualize the LC in vivo, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been applied. Spectral domain (SD)-OCT, used in conjunction with recently int...

Measurement of scleral thickness using swept-source optical coherence tomography in patients with open-angle glaucoma and myopia.

PURPOSE To use swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) to image the posterior sclera at the posterior pole and around the optic nerve head (ONH) and measure the subfoveal scleral thickness and laminar thickness to evaluate the relationship between the measured thicknesses and ocular parameters. DESIGN Prospective, cross-sectional design. METHODS The study included 103 patients with ...

Assessment of Anterior Segment Measurements with Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography before and after Ab Interno Trabeculotomy (Trabectome) Surgery

Purpose. To compare the changes of anterior segment parameters, assessed by swept source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) after combined Trabectome-cataract surgery and Trabectome-only surgery in open angle glaucoma patients. Methods. Thirty-eight eyes of 24 patients with open angle glaucoma were scanned with swept source AS-OCT before and 4 weeks after combined Trabectome...

Evaluation of retinal nerve fiber layer defect using wide-field en-face swept-source OCT images by applying the inner limiting membrane flattening

PURPOSE The assessment of retinal nerve fiber layer defects (RNFLDs) is a useful part of glaucoma care. Here, we obtained en-face images of retinal layers below the inner limiting membrane (ILM) with swept source-optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), and measured RNFLD angle with new software. METHODS This study included 105 eyes of 105 normal tension glaucoma (NTG) patients (age, 59.8 ± 13....

Diagnostic Ability of Macular Ganglion Cell Inner Plexiform Layer Measurements in Glaucoma Using Swept Source and Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography

PURPOSE To evaluate the diagnostic ability of macular ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer measurements in glaucoma, obtained using swept source (SS) and spectral domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to compare to circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) thickness measurements. METHODS The study included 106 glaucomatous eyes of 80 subjects and 41 eyes of 22 healthy...
